Balance and Equilibrium: One Scientist’s Perspective on Life and Work
Abstract:
The concept of work-life balance can be traced back to the early 20th century to an industrial
engineer named Lilian Moller Gilbreath who recognized the “importance of addressing the
psychological and emotional aspects of labor” (1) Dr. Gilbreath is popularly known as the mother
of twelve from the comical book and movie “Cheaper by the Dozen.” Women have long struggled
to balance the needs of the workplace, their own career and professional goals, with their
personal and family lives. In this presentation, I will posit that the division between “work” and
“life” is artificial and that it is important to address work-work and life-life balances along with
work-life balance. I will share experiences (my own and those of other women I know) and offer
perspectives, strategies, and suggestions for maintaining equilibrium at home and at work. I will
also share thoughts on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on work-life balance and possible
long-term changes.
